Sulptures, caves and baked goods - Elliston and surrounds, SA

 Day 47

We weren’t entirely sure where we were heading when we set off this morning after a glorious sunrise, but we knew there would be things worth seeing along the way.

First up were more stunning coastal views from Cummings Monument Lookout — dramatic cliffs and ocean one way, and when you turned around, peaceful views across Lake Hamilton. Eyre continues to deliver.

We then stopped at one of the strangest little roadside establishments we’ve encountered - part shop, part bar, part something else entirely - and had a chat with the resident crazy cat lady. As I bought a packet of chips, I counted at least 11 kittens and four adult cats cavorting behind the counter. An experience in itself.

Next stop was Elliston and the fabulous Clifftop Sculpture Trail. Just as impressive as Bondi’s Sculptures by the Sea, but without the crowds - dramatic art paired with wild ocean views.

This was followed by pies at the Elliston bakery - Stephen chose steak, I went with chicken - and so far, these are leading the pack. Pastry with the perfect balance of firmness and flakiness, chunky, flavoursome fillings: 9/10. Stephen also picked up a very impressive rocky road, which didn’t last long.

From Elliston we continued north‑west, keeping an eye out for a random roadside stall I’d read about at Colton, where they bake their own bread daily and sell it via an honesty box - available until sold out. We fully expected to miss out given it was well into the afternoon but pulled over on a whim when we spotted it and were rewarded with sticky fruit buns. They were divine and enjoyed later that evening.

We finished the day at Talia Caves, particularly taken with Woolshed Cave — a vast cavern carved into the granite cliffs by wave action. Less impressed by The Tub, a large crater connected to the sea by a tunnel, but worth a quick look nonetheless.

Another day of small surprises and big scenery - just the way we like it.
