Days 78-87
It seemed
appropriate that our snorkelling experiences on Ningaloo Reef deserved a
post of their own - they were easily the highlight of our stay.
One of the
most remarkable things about Ningaloo is just how close the reef is to shore.
You can literally walk a couple of metres into the water, put your face down,
and immediately find yourself surrounded by fish, coral, reef sharks, turtles, Red Bell jellyfish (of which there were many in the water and on the beach), starfish -
and plenty more.
We snorkelled
most days, exploring a range of different spots including Osprey Bay,
Turquoise Bay (drift snorkel), Lakeside and Oyster Stacks. Each was unique, all teeming with life and endlessly fascinating.
A standout experience was the Osprey Sanctuary Zone Kayak Trail. Two mooring buoys sit about a kilometre offshore - one a lagoon inside the main reef, the other near a cluster of large bombies within the reef channel. The full trail is around a 3km loop from the beach.
We loved the
rhythm of it - paddle out, tie up to a buoy, jump in for a snorkel, climb back
on (not always gracefully), and repeat. It did occur to us while bobbing around
out there that we’d never actually tried getting on and off the kayak in open
water before. Thankfully, we managed. Just.
What follows
is a collection of photos that pretty much say it all.
